Installing Shingles

My husband and I have good friends who bought a house that is a bit of a fixer upper. One of the major areas of the house that needs replacing is the roof. I have no experience in this area, and I am not sure either my husband or his male counterpart have any knowledge in this area either. I have repaired a roof while on a mission trip to Kentucky, but installing shingles from scratch is a whole different story. I am wondering if they could take a class at a hardware store or something along those lines before they undertake this project blindly.
