Problems with Patents

WOW! I just thought of/came up with an idea for a new invention. I am well aware that I need a patent to keep someone from stealing my idea and using it themselves. What I am interesting in knowing is the problems I might encounter during this process?
There are so many different things, which intellectual property attorney can possibly go wrong during the patent process; paperwork can get lost, or you just end up getting the wrong information. You might also find out that there already is something similar to your idea on the market. This is the worse case scenario.
