Even after you have cleared all the notary public requirements, examinations, and background checks, you have to apply for a commission to act as a notary public. Generally the commission is granted for a period of four years only. After this term has expired, the notary public has to reapply for getting the commission.

Reapplication for renewal of position as a notary public may or may not involve the reappearance in notary test. So it is technically possible to renew the commission through mail. For details you should contact your county clerk office.
