Hellsing and Shaman King

The comman thing often you find in Japanese anime is that they use the character strongly related to the dark side.
In Hellsing for example, uses a vampire for that, and Shaman King is using, well, the dead world people.
The funny thing is though that those anime does not look heavy or scary for some reason. Well, perhaps to the kinds they are, but not to the adults. It is probably due to the soft touch of Japanese anime drawing that is making us comfortable. If you would like to see what I mean, then you can give it a try and watch them. I am sure both Hellsing and Shaman King can be watched online.
